A Non-Spoiler Synopsis
Buffy grew up happy in the small town of Sweet Tooth. Sure she was forced to abide by all of the rules her small town God of Wrath worshipping cult but she was a chosen Blossom. As a Blossom she gets to marry Wrath spiritually but in reality she gets to marry Callum, the son of one Sweet Tooth’s Founding Families, and then move to the city. She and the rest of the Blossoms get to live out an exciting happy every after…at least so they thought.
Buffy’s wedding night takes a turn when her Prince Charming Callum attempts to murder her. Well he and the rest of Sweet Tooth’s Founding Families would call it “sacrificing” her in the name of Wrath. Jokes on them because for this first time in Sweet Tooth’s history Wrath does show up. And it turns out Wrath is not a God but a demon.
Lucky for Buffy, Wrath takes one look at her and claims her as his bride. He wants nothing more than to be a supportive and devoted husband. He is more than happy to help Buffy get revenge on her town’s cult. Hell hath no Wrath like a woman scorned.
My Thots on the Smut and Vibes
Trigger Warning: Violence and Gore on page
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is a rare case where there is insta-love and I am here for it. The style of writing is very unique. I can think of no other way to describe this book other than a dark comedic cozy romance.
Buffy our MFC, grew up as a Blossom in Sweet Tooths cult and as such she had no agency. The women of Sweet Tooth, especially Blossoms, are not only submissive to the men of Sweet Tooth but are not allowed to show any type of negative emotion. They are taught that they must constantly be smiling. I absolutely love the symbolism of the men forcing women to smile. It calls to mind the not unique experience that I’ve had of having random men telling me to smile. The character arc of Buffy not only getting her revenge but reclaiming her own smile was chefs kiss wonderfully done.
I loved the juxtaposition of Wrath being a demon and also being a complete golden retriever who makes cinnamon rolls. Yes, there is insta-love but the way Wrath is a supportive and patient husband that just wants to please Buffy totally make up for that. He is there for her throughout her journey and allows her to be the one to extract her vengeance and only steps in to help when she requests his aid.
As far as the smut in “That Time I Took Down a Cult” there is a good amount of chemistry between Buffy and Wrath. They’re immediately attracted to each other. Wrath’s demon form has horns which Buffy finds very attractive, and these horns are also sensitive. Wrath is a pleasure demon who has control over shadows and theses shadows play a role in their bedroom scenes. If you enjoy reading scenes of oral sex or sex with supernatural pleasure elements, you’ll enjoy the smut in this book.
Overall, I highly recommend this read. I haven’t read a comedic paranormal romance in a long time, and I cannot stress how much I enjoyed this book.
