A Non-spoiler Synopsis
What would Marie Curie do?
It’s a code that Bee Königswasser lives by during the day and is her online persona at night. To combat the manosphere that academia is, Bee runs the anomyomus “What Would Marie Curie Do?” twitter account, where women in STEM and academia can safely discuss and vent. But even Marie never had to deal with the likes of Levi Ward. Bee’s school nemesis and now fellow co-lead for NASA’s new neuroengineering project. But Bee won’t let Levi prevent her from living out her dreams after barely scraping by in academia.
It doesn’t matter that Levi came to her rescue like a romance novel hero during her horrific first day in the lab. Mr. Tall and Broody cand take his avoidant and antagonistic nature, and swallow it for the sake of professionalism. But when Bee finds her equipment missing and staff ignoring her is Levi to blame?
I mean he does seem to be supporting her in meetings and is acknowledging her scientific expertise…but is that a front? Bee’s suspicions and her feelings are at odds but at the end of the day, the only question she could ask herself is “What would Marie Curie do?”.
My Thots on the Smut and Vibes of “Love on the Brain” by Ali Hazelwood (light spoilers)
Ali Hazelwood knocks it out of the park with this one. “Love on the Brain” takes one of my favorite tropes, aka enemies to lovers, and puts a fun spin on it. Bee is operating under the assumption that Levi hates her and is deliberately ignoring her and belittling her but in reality, he has been in love with her since school.
One thing that Ali Hazelwood does well is writing MMCs that are absolutely obsessed and in love. You get all the fun of enemies to lovers with the romance of he falls first and harder. Unbeknownst to Bee she has been online friends with Levi for years through her “What Would Marie Curie Do?” twitter account and we get to hear directly from him how in love he is with her. To her. Without Either of Them Realizing it! Total kick your feet romance moment that I loved!
This is a spicy book, but the spice doesn’t take place until the later part of the book, so we also get a little slow burn action as well.
If you’re looking for a fun contemporary romance that actually does enemies to lovers well than I recommend this read.
